How Often Should I Have a Roof Wash?

Roofs suffer from the effects of weather, dirt, and debris, which all accumulate over time. This can result in your roof becoming less aerodynamic, and lead to a decline in the performance of your home’s HVAC system. You should have a roof wash once every 2-3 years depending on what type of roof you have. If you live in a heavily populated area or near a busy street, then it could be more frequent than that!

Please note that the more your roof is exposed to sun, dirt, and plant growth (especially trees), then the faster it will accumulate. A darker roof actually holds heat inside the structure of your home; this can be good in cooler temperatures but bad during warmer seasons.

Direct sunlight cannot penetrate through most dark-colored roofs, so they tend to become hotter than lighter-colored ones. This is also true with direct exposure to vegetation. Many plants drop leaves or needles onto the top of homes causing stains, seedlings/moss are able to grow on shingles creating an unsightly appearance that eventually turns into a fire hazard as well as reducing light transference through your roof’s solar panels.

If you live near a busy street or in a high-traffic area, your roof may be exposed to more dirt and debris than other areas.

In the case of asphalt shingles, check for any debris that has been caught in between your shingles or building up on your roof. You should remove and replace damaged shingles and seal loose areas immediately. It is also advisable to make sure the gutters and downspouts are clear of leaves and other debris, which can allow water to overflow onto your roof, causing it to become more vulnerable to leaks.

Clean your roof with a good quality commercial pressure washer at least once every 2-3 years or as needed (after wind storms or heavy rains that wash debris into the valleys). A strong jet spray is often used along with a brush during the washing process. With each cleaning, less-soiled water should be expelled from the rooftop to ensure the surface is pristine and clean. Also, a portion of leaf debris can be dried up with a leaf blower first then followed by pressure washing in order to minimize the use of water in case there are drought conditions in your area.

Don’t Forget About Your Gutters!

It’s important to note that regular roof cleaning should not replace gutter cleaning, which needs to be done more frequently (after every heavy rainfall or when they become clogged with leaves). If there are already loose shingles around your habitat, make sure you repair them as soon as possible or it will lead to leaks. Also keep in mind that when hiring local services for roof cleaning, sure they know what kind of roof you have in order to determine the right method that should be used.

If you are worried about having your roof cleaned, then use these tips for how to clean your own roof which is very effective in most cases! Just make sure you don’t climb up the ladder while you’re still wearing your favorite black dress pants with white polka dots!

Remember, the longer your roof is left this way, it will continue to cause more damage and stress to your HVAC system. You wouldn’t like this situation happening in your home since it will cost you a fortune down the road for all the needed repairs!
